Letter to Friends & Readers: End of April 2008
This month has to be one of the worst I've had in a while. My dear cat, Lewis, who is only 14 years old, became extremely sick. Last Saturday we rushed him to the CSU Vet Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. It's about an hours drive from where we live. We had already spent $1000 on vet bills in Boulder, only to discover that his symptoms were getting worse.
Saturday night we checked him in. They wanted to do an ultrasound and some chest x-rays. Sadly we left Lewis (we call him Lu-Lu) there and waited by the phone. At about 4am we got a basic update, that he was stable. On Monday they did extensive tests and discovered all sorts of problems with his kidneys, his liver, and worst of all with his lungs. LuLu was already anorexic, and they decided to do surgery to remove some of his teeth. We were elated that surgery on his teeth might solve some of his most immediate issues.
On Tuesday, after the surgery I was called and told it went quite well. I breathed a HUGE sigh of relief. Unfortunately, an hour later I received the call he wasn't coming out of the anesthesia. Ugg! I drove down immediately and was faced with some awful decisions. His lungs were full of fluid, and it was really touch and go.
Amazingly, they stabilized my dear beloved cat. I swear I thought he was going to die. It was one of the most stressful and painful experiences of my life.
On Wednesday they called and said I should come get him. They thought he might have a better chance of eating at home. With chronic asthma and numerous health issues, we are currently nursing him at home. I've been successful in getting him to eat a bit, and he's been sleeping in my arms every night.
Please say a prayer for my little kitty who is my best friend.
Thanks everyone,
Tara
